I used to be one of those people who thought reading is such a time waste activity. Why should I waste my time on reading when I can do so many fun activities instead?
Let me tell you about myself. I am a B Tech in Computer Science and Engineering from IIT Bombay. To know about the life at IIT Bombay, read this blog post.
I am writing this post to share with you how my life changed as I started reading. I will try to summarise them in concise manner in 8 benefits of reading.
1. Stimulation of Mind (Mind Workout)

Just like physical workout is necessary for your body, mental exercise is necessary for your mind. Reading books helps stimulate your minds which keeps it fit and healthy.
- Helps in creative thinking
- Keeps the neurons in your brains firing
- Keeps the cells in your brain healthy and functioning
2. Personal Development

Reading Non Fiction, specifically self help books helps you to realise things that you can easily do in your life / change in your life to change your life considerably.
Even the fiction helps you to give a new perspective to life and get inspired to achieve something great in your life.
3. Knowledge

The most obvious benefit of reading books is that it comes with immense knowledge and is free for everyone. Anyone can take advantage of this to accumulate this great wealth ie. knowledge and become wiser everyday.
4. Improved Focus and Concentration

Reading books indirectly helps your focus and concentration abilities. Since reading involves extended period of you reading a particular topic and focusing on reading and understanding, it naturally builds your focus and concentration skills and takes it to the next level.
5. Stronger Analytical Abilities

As an IITian, I have realised that one of the most important things to be successful in whatever you do is to have good analytical skills. Reading books not only involves you directly in analytics but also trains your mind to easily use analytical skills when needed in any activity and not just study.
6. Sharper Memory

Reading frequently improves your memory capabilities for the young people. For old people, it slows down the deterioration process of their memory abilities and helps them regain their memory skills for a longer time.
There are various books which specially teach about various memory techniques, like building memory palaces (as Sherlock did) or use mnemonics to memorise almost anything.
7. Creativity

One of the side effects of reading frequently involves improving the creative side of the brain. By reading books, specially Fiction, helps in exercising your creative side of the brain since you imagine and picture things on your own and are not spoon fed like in movies.
This trait helps you not only in reading book but in thinking almost anything. It helps you in work by making you more creative.
8. Improves your vocabulary

You can show off your improved vocabulary that you build by reading books. Give speeches, talk to your friends, colleagues, write a post, write to someone you admire. Good vocabulary helps everywhere.
People respect you that you have such a great depth of knowledge and know how to express yourself.
I hope this post encourages you at some level to start reading book if not already started. Or to read them more often, if you already have started reading.
